Sci-Fi December: Robocop

Robocop Illustration by Jeff Schwartzbauer

Robocop – 1987
Dir. Paul Verhoeven | Starring: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith
Year: “Near Future”
Review: This is VerHoeven at his best. Bloody, cynical, and laced with dark humor. When the film was originally released it received an “X” rating before several key scenes of violence were eased back, but thankfully that cut has been restored. Kurtwood Smith has probably the most memorable performance as the evil Clarence Boddicker – an absolute horrendous maniac. VerHoeven has his trademark takes on American culture by intercutting the film with News broadcast parodies and fake commercials for ridiculous products. This is classic 80’s action sci-fi cinema.

  1. One of the very best. I always remember growing up thinking that I wanted Robocops fist key that he could stick into anything and unlock or hack into any system.

Robocop always had the best zingers.

    • The Fist-Key he has doesn’t seem very practical except for the something that requires a fist key. Its like a spike and would only fit in a spike shaped hole. But it does allow him to stab the hell out of Bodickers neck.
